Amputation - Supplemental Activity 3

Guest Speaker

Invite someone from your community who has an amputation sustained from an injury to visit the class and share how the injury has affected his/her lifestyle. If possible, it is best to use a farmer. Your County Extension Agent will usually know someone who has been injured while farming. Another source would be your state AgrAbility Program, if your state has the program. For a listing of AgrAbility project locations and contacts see the "Additional Resources" section of this manual or go to http://www.agrabilityproject.org/.

Prepare a list of questions you wish the speaker to cover, and present the material to him/her beforehand. A possible study sheet could be used for students to write down the speaker's comments as the speaker responds to the questions.

Sample questions:

  • How old were you when you had your amputation?
  • What was your first thought?
  • How did it influence your life?
  • How did people respond to you?
  • What was the hardest task you had to do after your injury?
  • How did your injury affect your farm work?
