Farmer's Lung - Narrative Simulation

Materials needed: "Ben Can't Breathe" problem booklet and answer sheets

Time required:
15 minutes for written completion
15 minutes for discussion

Use the narrative simulation "Ben Can't Breathe" with the students to develop a view of real-life problems associated with Farmer's Lung. Students will develop an understanding of the disease, its causes, and how it can affect the person's lifestyle in the present as well as the long-term. Students may be allowed to work in small groups at the discretion of the teacher. After completion of the activity, allow for discussion of the information and student findings.

Sample questions to use with the "Ben Can't Breathe" narrative:

  • How did Ben contract the disease? What are some other ways to contract Farmer's Lung?
  • Do any of you work under conditions that could cause lung damage?
  • How did Farmer's Lung affect Ben? His family?
  • How could Ben have prevented the disease?
  • Do you wear protective equipment when working in conditions that threaten your health (moldy, dusty, etc.)? Why or why not?
