Abstract
The SMV symbol provides important information to motorists. It tells them that they are approaching a vehicle that may be traveling very slowly. That is, it tells them this if they know what the symbol means. A survey of state driver's manuals revealed a wide range in the quality of information provided to drivers about the SMV symbol, from no information, to inaccurate representations of the symbol, to the correct information. To be effective, the public must receive consistent and complete messages about the hazards of sharing the road with agricultural equipment and the proper marking of equipment.
