Abstract
It has been said that only what you count counts, and this is nowhere more true than in considering the National Agricultural Worker Survey (NAWS). This past year, many people were dismayed to discover that the federal government slated the NAWS for elimination. With a concerted effort, the NAWS was saved, but the message was very clear: hired farmworkers don't count. The result of not counting (enumerating) hired farmworkers would be to make this important population more invisible, and this would lead to reduced public services for farmworkers, unrecorded adverse health and safety outcomes, and lack of guidance for immigration and guest worker policies and for federal farmworker programs.
